Chris Brown says he was supposed to do a big Michael Jackson tribute at the AMAs this weekend, but claims the honchos pulled the plug at the last minute out of nowhere.

The singer posted a lengthy video on Saturday that shows him at a dance rehearsal with a bunch of people...and he's pulling off some serious MJ-inspired moves to some classic hits, which Chris says would have is part of a stunning number during the Sunday show.

Songs featured include "Beat It", "Billie Jean", "Wanna Be Starting Something" and "Thriller". Presumably, this corresponds to the 40th anniversary of Mike's best-selling album.

Chris' original caption reads: "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" He continued in a later comment, writing… “THAT WOULD have been the ama performance but they canceled me for unknown reasons.” IG users mostly support Chris, openly asking why they ditched him if it was so good.

Of course, there is speculation as to why CB's performance may have been canceled. Frankly, it's controversial...even all these years later. Michael himself is obviously also polarizing...especially in recent years with the allegations highlighted in the documentary "Leaving Neverland".

Nevertheless, Chris' tribute would have been a nice looping moment - the guy has done famous tributes to MJ in the past, like in 2010 when he did a big one at the BET Awards... a year later Michael was dead.
