Christmas: Enugu residents denounce the high price of chicken

Residents of Enugu, Enugu State have denounced the high cost of live chickens as they prepare to celebrate Christmas this year.

They came out in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Enugu.

NAN reports that chicken prices ranged between 5,000 and 15,000 naira depending on size and weight.

Also, a live turkey sells for between 25,000 and 30,000 naira.

A resident of Enugu, Anastasia Nwobodo, said she came to Garki market to buy chicken for 4,000 naira, but was surprised not to find any.

"My husband and I agreed to buy a small chicken to celebrate Christmas, but to my surprise there was no chicken for N4000, no matter how small.

"I decided to buy pork to celebrate anything, at least for the sake of our children," she said.

Another resident, Erasmus Nwadike, also lamented the high cost of birds in the market, saying he expected an increase.

"I knew it wouldn't be easy due to several factors including rising gas prices and high food costs, but not as easy as it is now.

"Things are just too expensive, imagine I bought a chicken for 10,000 naira; something that would normally have cost the highest N4000.

“Things seem to be getting worse every day in Nigeria. I don’t know where we are going,” he said.

Mr. Nwadike, who is a senior civil servant, expressed concern about what would happen to Nigeria if things continued like this.

“Are we really going to survive it, let’s see,” he said.

“I can’t afford to buy N10,000 chicken because as a family of seven it can’t take us far. And in January you start talking about school fees”, she said.

A poultry farmer, Innocent Nnam, attributed the high cost of chicken this year to factors such as feed cost, transportation cost and the high cost of things in general.

"Last year at this time my most expensive bird was between N7000 and N8000 but the general cost of bringing birds to market is much higher now so we are just trying to make ends meet," he says.

NAN reports that a size from Turkey that sold for 10,000 Naira last year is selling for around 30,000 Naira this year.
