Cole claims Ferguson could not bring Chelsea closer to Man City this season

Joe Cole claims that if Chelsea had appointed Sir Alex Ferguson he 'wouldn't have an immediate impact on the downsizing' at Manchester City.

The legendary Manchester United manager won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues during his long reign at Old Trafford.

But Cole doubts Ferguson can get current Chelsea side to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel last month as it became clear the new owners of Stamford Bridge and the German were not on the same page.

The Blues opted to replace Tuchel with Brighton boss Graham Potter and the Englishman secured a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace in his first Premier League game in charge.

"When you come to Chelsea, you have to win games and win trophies," Cole told The Sun.

"The club has built on this over the last 20 years. Fans are used to big games and cup finals, so Potter can't just ignore that. He will always be in the background.

"But with so much new around the club, they seem to have moved away from that immediate success plan that Chelsea are normally associated with.

"This appointment tells me that Chelsea are looking at the long term, and it's a smart move because Manchester City are so far ahead.

"You could employ Sir Alex and Brian Clough, all of management's all-time greats together, and they still wouldn't have an immediate impact by taking City down, arguing over trophies with them.

“It will be a process to do it. It may take years over months, but I like the date. If you picked a manager from the 80s or 90s and put him in the dressing room now , that would be a disaster.

"Potter is a modern manager with modern methods and modern ways of connecting with people. I think he is the future. If he is allowed to build, with the resources he has, then he is the right man for this job.

“If you take a path of stability with good people, you will eventually succeed.”

Cole added: "The players are a fantastic group. They've achieved a great amount. There are some good senior players and it's a real good group.

"They won't be happy with this performance [in Zagreb]. They have pride and they will want to play in a showpiece game against one of the giants of European football."
