Commuters react to new BRT fares

Some Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) transport users in Lagos expressed their views on Sunday on the N100 increase in transport fare which came into effect on July 13.

They spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved the increase of N100 on all BRT routes to cover increased operational costs, such as diesel and spare parts.

A printer, Saka Lawal, who resides in Ikorodu and works in Fadeyi, said the state government should have listened to the opinion of the people before the final implementation.

Mr. Lawal, who is a regular BRT passenger, said they had been talking with the government through their WhatsApp platform for more than a month before the final result.

He said the money was high for some people and there were concerns that other commercial buses would follow suit and raise their prices.

Mr. Lawal urged the government to provide additional buses, especially in Ikorodu, to solve the problem of long queues that cause many people to come to the office late every day.

"We understand that diesel is expensive and not available at some gas stations, but the government should improve its standards and reduce queues at the various BRT bus stops," he said. he declared.

Adewale Johnson, a Lagos Island banker, said the N100 increase was reasonable.

Toyin Ayilara, a trader who connects Abule-Egba to Oshodi, said the increase would affect her daily budget. She also urged the government to get more buses.

Furthermore, a carpet seller in Itire, Yekini Sanusi, said that he bought an N600 BRT top-up on the Cowry card, but ended up boarding other commercial buses after waiting in the queue for three hours.

"We are not happy with the increase, it was N300 from Ikorodu to CMS or Costain, during the heat of COVID-19, but it was increased to N500 while respecting social distancing.

“After the period, the government refused to reduce the fare and increase the number on the buses and now they have increased the fare with N100,” Mr Sanusi said.

He pleaded with the state government to reverse the trend as the country was facing many problems affecting ordinary people.

A Tejuosho market tailor who resides in Ojo, Mary Emeka, has pleaded with the government to get more buses to travel the Ojo-CMS axis.
