COP27: Nigeria inaugurates its national logo, lists its priorities and expectations

The Nigerian government unveiled its “national COP27 logo” on Friday and listed the key expectations and priorities it hopes to achieve from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Environment Minister Mohammed Abdullahi unveiled the logo during a briefing to journalists in Abuja, on preparations for the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27).

Mr. Abdullahi said the conference would be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 8, adding that Nigeria, as a signatory, should actively participate.

He said the inauguration of the logo represents alignment with the ideals and goals of COP27, but distinctly projects national priorities as a country.

He said COP27 was a rare opportunity for parties and observers to come together and address a challenge that impacts humanity.

He said the conference must also show unity against an existential threat that can only be overcome through concerted action and effective implementation.

The Minister said that Nigeria's main priorities and expectations from the conference include the provision of a national pavilion at the COP27 venue.

He said the pavilion would serve as the base to accommodate all the activities of the Nigerian delegation during the conference to hold bilateral meetings.

He said it will also provide a venue for networking with potential investors and related opportunities for Nigerians.

According to him, arrangements to host side events at the Nigeria Pavilion by interested stakeholders are being processed.

"Side events to be held in the pavilion will focus on showcasing best practices from Nigeria and engaging with international communities.

“The side events will also engage in green investment dialogues and forums to tackle climate change and move Nigeria onto a low-carbon development path.

“Nigeria will participate in a global leaders-level summit with other nations to co-launch the ‘Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership,’ he said.

Mr. Abdullahi said the leader's partnership was being championed by the British government through Alok Sharma, the COP26 president.

He said that Nigeria would organize, under the auspices of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), a high-level side event.

He said the meeting followed President Muhammadu Buhari's session at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) conference (COP15) in Abidjan in May 2022.
