County Championship: Hameed and Montgomery give Notts a strong start against Durham

Hameed's 115 and Montgomery's 101 not out - his first class first century - helped Nottinghamshire conclude 276-2 against Durham, knowing that a draw will ensure they go up and that a win wins the Division Two Title.

Montgomery, a 22-year-old right-handed hitter who covers the England's Ben Duckett in third place, is only in his fourth Premier League game for the county, but already looks an outstanding prospect.

Hameed's reputation is second to none. It was his fourth century of the season and his 12th overall, his 1,186 runs this summer nearly matching the 1,198 that he made for Lancashire in his sensational first full season in 2016.

Nottinghamshire's plans took a perfect start that the coin toss allowed them to choose to bat first and a largely comfortable morning session on ground suitable for their purposes saw them progress to 94-1 at lunchtime.

Durham's seam attack, led by Ben Raine and England's Matty Potts, caused a few streak moments with the new ball but only one wicket .

Ben Slater, who was dropped on 18 at Ollie Gibson's second slide, was caught by 23 Raine, via what looked like an inside edge.

Otherwise there was very little ground for any bowlers, including spinners Liam Trevaskis and George Drissell.

When Hameed led Trevaskis generously through the extra coverage area for his ninth boundary, taking a single ball next for an 89-ball fifty, a substantial total already looked on the cards.
