Responding to the 327 visitors, Ben Compton, who had been designated to retire if Zak Crawley had been in fine form after England duty, anchoring Kent's innings with a typically dogged 95.

Denly then bowled a more flamboyant 105 not out, off 149 balls with 11 fours and a six, to record his first red-ball century of the season as Kent closed with two potentially crucial batting runs and a lead of 18.
