Court allows trial of Ondo Speaker and two others

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, the state capital, has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to prosecute the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, Mr. David Oleyeloogun, and others for alleged fraud.

The EFCC had previously approached the court to seek prosecution of the lawmakers concerned for their alleged involvement in an alleged fraudulent practice.

The alleged fraud was allegedly committed in 2019 when lawmakers were supposed to have attended a two-day seminar organized by the National Center for Productivity in Lagos, but they did not attend.

Besides Oleyeloogun, other defendants in the case include a lawmaker, Mr. Felemu Bankole, and a staff member of the State Legislative Assembly, Mr. Olusegun Kayode.

During the proceedings, the defendants' lawyer, Dr. Remi Olatubora, asked the court to quash the charges against his clients for the EFCC's failure to comply with the practical directives of the judiciary of the judiciary. 'Mandatory Federal Government agencies must obtain the consent of the judiciary before they can sue in state courts.

However, the EFCC, in its application through its lawyer, Mr. Fredrick Dibang, urged the court to grant the commission permission to prosecute the defendants in accordance with the practical guidelines of the judiciary.< /p>

In his decision, the judge, Judge Adegboyega Adebusuyi, ordered the anti-corruption agency to bring new charges against the defendants and set October 27, 2022 for the hearing of the case.
