The economy of the digital world has evolved alongside that of the physical world, shifting from a focus on products to services and now experiences. Joseph Pine and James Gilmore first introduced the concept in their book [1], "The Experience Economy". There they observed that "personal interaction with customers is the DNA of the experience economy".

As consumers continue to accelerate their adoption of digital technologies, the experience economy has become firmly entrenched in the digital world. And end users have dramatically increased their expectations for digital experiences tailored to their interests and needs at all times.

As a result, it has become imperative for organizations to deliver personalized, real-time, location-aware, predictive, and omnichannel digital experiences. Additionally, the teams building these digital experiences need a proper methodology to firmly and securely represent personalization attributes in the digital world. The "digital double" is a concept created to meet this need.

The idea for a digital twin came to me in the spring of 2016. I was traveling to give a speech at WSO2Con Asia (the APAC edition of WSO2's annual user conference) on the topic " Building a Digital Business: Learning from Experience."

So I started creating the main storyboard about the long flight from San Francisco to Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, the scenario does not unfold as I hoped. So, I turned on the onboard entertainment system and came across the movie Tron Legacy, where the characters are pulled into a virtual world. That's when I understood: the digital universe requires an appropriate representation of physical and digital assets, a digital double.

Define a digital double

There are concepts similar to the digital twin, largely driven by the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT). The digital twin and the digital self are good examples, but they each represent only one type of asset. In contrast, the digital twin is a representation of people, places, and things in the digital universe.

Your digital twin is always active in digital space, regardless of physical activity like sleeping or watching TV. Not only that, it makes decisions on your behalf. Dating apps are a great example for understanding the behavior of a digital doppelganger. Once you create a profile in the dating app, your digital double starts dating people on your behalf. As a result, you'll miss your first date, but you'll get a better match.
