Being versatile should be part of any actor's repertoire, but Benedict Cumberbatch was pushed to new limits when he ran around New York dressed like a 7-foot monster.

"It was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever done - and I've done a few," he told BBC News. "But it was fun - and terribly funny."

He stars in the thriller television series Eric, as Vincent, the troubled father of a nine year old boy. who disappears on the way to school.

Set in New York in the 1980s, the show presents Vincent as a somewhat charmless puppeteer. He is the co-creator of Good Day Sunshine, a popular children's television show that celebrates being "different."

Vincent and his wife Cassie are panicked with worry after the disappearance of their son, which shatters their unhappy marriage as Vincent collapses.

Devastated by guilt, he becomes even more caustic and destructive.

Vincent also becomes obsessed with the idea that if he manages to create a real version of Eric, a monster that his son imagined and drew at home, he will find Edgar.

The puppeteer even hallucinates seeing Eric standing next to him, joking and drilling holes in his ego - because "puppets say things we don't "We can't."
