His working-class parents were gifted with their hands. They encouraged her to do things, which she did enthusiastically. But they were deeply intrigued by their daughter's addiction to reading, once paying her to destroy her library card.

She had enviable self-confidence, believing herself to be an exceptional craftswoman. At Glossop High School, she saw herself “as a kind of champion”. "Honestly," she says, "at five years old, I could have made a pair of shoes."
