Despite Ongoing ASUU Strike, UNILORIN Appoints New Vice-Chancellor

Despite ongoing industrial action for more than seven months by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Governing Body of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, announced Thursday evening the appointment of a new vice-chancellor.

The new Vice-Chancellor, Wahab Egbewole, who is expected to take office on October 16, is a law professor and senior lawyer in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the chairman of the institution's board of directors, Abidu Yazidi.

University spokesperson Kunle Akogun confirmed the new PREMIUM TIMES development in a phone interview.

Selection process

In a brief speech delivered by Mr. Yazidi on Thursday at the announcement, he said that the selection for vice-chancellor processes began in March with publicity in line with the law establishing the university.< /p>

He said; "In accordance with the laws of this University, the University of Ilorin Act, the CAP U7 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, the term of the current Vice Chancellor shall expire on 15 October 2022, the University Council began the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor as early as March 2022.

"We advertised the applicants nationwide and also via our website. We ultimately received some twenty-nine (29) applications as part of this effort. Even before the returns were received, however, we mounted a special research process whereby we contacted no less than fifty-six (56) individuals in universities and other institutions, both at home and abroad."

Mr. Yazidi said that following the formation of a selection committee, 13 of the candidates "who met our advertisement and other requirements" were shortlisted for interview by the committee on behalf of the board.

The President added: "We interacted with them and processed their applications over a period of four days. We checked and rechecked their references, we interviewed and probed each of them closely to ensure that they would support and achieve the vision and mission of the University.

Mr. Egbewole, 61, holds a doctorate in law and jurisprudence and has reportedly served the university for the past 25 years.

The new Vice Chancellor, who hails from Ifetedo in the South Ife Local Government Area of ​​Osun State, was formerly Head of the University's General Studies Division.

He was appointed Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law in 2012 and has served on the University's Senate and Board of Trustees.
