Discord has announced the rollout of its latest feature, called Forum Channels. These new specialty channels provide a place for more restricted and focused conversation. Organized in a central hub, forum channels are for specific discussions that would otherwise clog more general channels.

Moderators can create as many forum channels as they want, and they can restrict each to specific users, as appropriate. They can also create guidelines and tags for discussions. Users can also (provided they have the permissions) view the entire discussion before joining.

This feature seems designed to fix one of Discord's recurring problems: Too many channels. In any given server, especially a server with a lot of people, users have dozens of channels to choose from. It can be intimidating to step into the middle of an ongoing discussion. Forum channels present easier ways to separate discussions.

According to the Discord blog post, "Like threads and text-in-voice before, forum channels allow focused conversations to thrive without monopolizing a channel. No more watching an interesting discussion be drowned out, hijacked or abandoned because it remained obsolete for a few hours. More than ever, every conversation now has its place on Discord."

GamesBeat's credo when covering the gaming industry is "where passion meets business". What does it mean? We want to tell you how much the news means to you, not only as a decision maker in a game studio, but also as a game fan. Whether you read our articles, listen to our podcasts, or watch our videos, GamesBeat will help you learn about and engage with the industry. Discover our Briefings.
