Dog that inspired 'Doge' meme has leukemia and liver disease, owner says

The dog behind the famous "Doge" meme has been diagnosed with leukemia and liver disease, his owner has announced.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Atsuko Sato, the Japanese owner of Kabosu, revealed that the 17-year-old shiba inu has chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a type of blood and bone marrow cancer, and cholangiohepatitis, a inflammation of the bile ducts, gallbladder and liver tissue.

"Right now, the liver level is very bad and jaundice appears," Sato said.

Nevertheless, Kabosu has an appetite and is able to drink water, she says.

In 2013, Kabosu became an internet sensation thanks to a photo from 2010 that Sato posted on his blog. The photo shows Kabosu with his legs crossed, looking slightly at the camera with a small smirk.

The meme is notably accompanied by captions of terse expressions and broken English such that "wow", "so scared" and "much respect".

Since then Kabosu and his meme Doge have gone viral, even the recently launched cryptocurrency Dogecoin is inspired by the meme. In 2021, the "Doge" meme was sold as a non-fungible token, or NFT, for a staggering $4 million, making it the most expensive NFT meme ever sold.

In a post earlier this week, Sato said that Kabosu had been sick since Christmas Eve and was unable to eat or drink water.

Sato then said in another message that Kabosu underwent blood tests and was informed by her doctor that Kabosu "was in a very dangerous condition".

"Didn't expect it to be so bad," Sato wrote.

Photos and videos uploaded by Sato show Kabosu lying under a blanket. In one post, Sato is seen giving Kabosu water from a bottle.

There was an outpouring of good wishes towards Kabosu, many netizens wishing the shiba inu a speedy recovery.

"It'll be okay, you have the world praying for you, roam hard Kabosu," wrote one user.< /p>

Other users addressed Kabosu by his internet nickname, saying, "It's going to be okay, doge!" and "Doge, we're here for you."

On average, Shiba Inus have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
