Edo Hospital trains 600 residents in CPR

About 600 residents of Edo were trained on Sunday by the University Hospital of Benin (UBTH) in Basic Life Support for first responders.

The training program on "Advancing the Legacy of Quality Health Care" is part of the activities marking the 50th anniversary of the hospital, which will take place on May 12, 2023.

Participants in the training held at Oba Ovoranmwen Park, Mission Road, Benin-Lagos Road, Edo State, included security guards, paramilitary officers, journalists and women traders, among others.

It provided participants with the knowledge and skills required for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other relevant procedures needed in an emergency.

UBTH Chief Medical Director Darlington Obaseki said the essence of the program was to train those who were not doctors or medical personnel on how to resuscitate people in the event of an emergency. medical emergency.

He said: "As a hospital, we have decided to take this opportunity of our 50th anniversary to teach society, especially first responders, namely road safety, police officers and journalists. They are usually the first on the scene of an emergency.

“If, as a journalist covering an event, you see someone collapsing, you should not wait for a doctor, but be able to help the patient before medical personnel arrive. That is why we have organized this training for everyone. You don't have to go to medical school to do these things."

He said UBTH management has organized a series of events to give back to members of the public, as well as preparation for his birthday next year.

UBTH Paramedic Training School Assistant Coordinator Dr Abebe John said the training was aimed at raising awareness of lifesaving skills that would enable members of the public to help in an emergency when they happen.

He noted that many people are unaware of these vital skills, hence the need for training.
