EFCC accuses official of defrauding 23 church members

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has indicted a 53-year-old civil servant for defrauding 23 church members through an employment scam in Offa, State from Kwara.

Oyayemi Fafemi, an employee of the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State on Monday, the EFCC spokesperson said on Tuesday , Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement.

According to the statement, Ms. Fafemi has pleaded not guilty to four counts related to the employment scam and the Hajj pilgrimage.

The trial judge, Mohammed Sani, granted him bail and adjourned the case until November 17 for trial.

The Ilorin Area Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has indicted a 53-year-old official, Oyawoye R. Olajumoke Fafemi, for allegedly defrauding 23 (twenty-three) members of church looking for a job.

Fafemi, a staff member of the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, was brought before Judge Mohammed Sani of the Federal High Court, sitting in Ilorin on Monday, September 26, 2022, on four counts, to the limit of employment and scam at Hajj pilgrimage.

The defendant was accused of collecting various sums of money from 23 members of the Christ Apostolic Church in Offa, Kwara State under the pretense of helping them find employment within Kwara State Civil Service Commission and Federal Government parastatals.

Investigations revealed that Fafemi had sent employment letters to his victims. The letters stated that his victims had been employed by the Kwara State Government and the Federal Government, with their ranks and salaries listed. However, these letters later turned out to be fake.

Count one of the charge readings:

”That you, Oyawoye R. Olajumoke Fafemi, between the month of April and September 2019, at Ilorin, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, with intent to defraud, obtained the gross sum of N2,000,000 .00 (Two Million Maria Only) of one Moronfoye Solomon Daramola on the pretext that you will secure government employment for members of his church; a statement which you knew to be false and who thereby committed an offense contrary to section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Charge Fraud and Other Fraud Offenses Act 2006 and punishable under of Article 1 (3) of the same law "

Count four reads:

"That you, OYAWOYE R. OLAJUMOKE FAFEMI, between the month of May and August 2019, at Ilorin, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained the gross sum of N700,000.00 (seven hundred thousand naira Only) from an Adeoti Kamoru on the pretext that you will obtain a Hajj pilgrimage visa for him; a statement which you knew to be false and who thereby committed an offense contrary to section (1)(a) of the Advance Charges Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offenses Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”.

Fafemi pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

Based on his arguments, the prosecutor's attorney, Andrew Akoja, urged the court to give a trial date to allow the prosecution to prove their case. Defense attorney A.T Yusuf, however, urged the court to grant his client bail, pending the hearing and decision on the case.

Judge Sani granted Fafemi bail in the amount of 2 million naira and two bails of a similar amount. The defendant was ordered to submit two of her passport photographs to the court.

The judge adjourned the case to November 17, 2022 for the start of the trial.
