EFCC intercepts N32.4m allegedly intended for vote buying

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it seized 32.4 million naira suspected of being used for vote buying in Lagos.

EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren said on Friday that officers from the commission's Lagos Area Command had arrested the suspect involved for further questioning.

The commission did not name the suspect in its statement.

PREMIUM TIMES announced on Tuesday that the EFCC will monitor and observe Saturday's general election.

The commission said it will deploy some of its staff to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to fight vote buying.

Reports also said Friday that police arrested a member of the House of Representatives with $498,100 and a distribution list in Rivers State.

The massive operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to deter vote-swapping and other financial malfeasance ahead of tomorrow's presidential and national elections may have begun to bear fruit with the interception in Lagos of the sum of 32,400,000 naira (Thirty-two million four hundred thousand naira) suspected of being used to buy votes in Lagos. The recovery was carried out by officers from the Commission's Lagos Area Command.

The suspect involved has been taken into custody for further questioning.

Commission Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa implored all Commission personnel deployed on election observation tasks to show courage and not give way to unscrupulous people to undermine the election integrity through financial incentives.
