Election petition: APC is already planning a new race, says LP

Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure said on Monday he had received reports that the Congress of All Progressives was already preparing for a possible rerun of the 2023 presidential election, urging party members to be vigilant.

Abure said this during an online meeting held with the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, led by Professor Eddie Oparaoji, President of the Labor Party Diaspora in the United States, in Abuja reports The PUNCH.

He explained that the ruling party was aware that the tide was tilted heavily against him in the ongoing legal challenge to the presidential election results as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The party's acting national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement, quoted Abure as calling on the party's more than 10 million members to be "on alert and prepared to further humiliate the 'APC and its government in the polls if their sinister plot doesn't come to fruition.'

He said, "There are rumors that members of the government are already planning another execution and this is one of the supports we will seek from you.

"We must also prepare, because since all members of the government are already preparing for a new race, we must not be caught off guard.

"So we will need your commitment and your support on this aspect if by chance this happens today, that the election is canceled, which is not what we are asking because we are asking an outright statement from Peter Obi as President of Nigeria.

"We firmly believe that we have won this election given the statistics we have, given the result we have, we expect nothing less than the declaration of Peter Obi as President of the Federal Republic But assuming that doesn't happen, as the government is believed to be planning a new election, it won't be out of place for us to prepare for a new election either.

"Having said that on the side, I must make it clear that we have presented all of our evidence in court, we are optimistic that the court will act in our favour.

"We are optimistic that assuming the case goes to the higher court, the Supreme Court, in this case, it will work in our favor as well. We remain hopeful and confident.

"In nine months, we are in a position to change the political narratives of this country and we must build on these successes so that we can have a more formidable party that we can strategically position for the oppressed people of Nigeria."

In his contribution to the discussion, Obi-Datti's presidential campaign manager, Ambassador Oseloka Obaze, urged Obi-Datti members in the diaspora to view the struggle to reclaim the party's mandate as a collective responsibility.
