Elections: Court of Appeal confirms Umeh as LP candidate for Anambra Central

The Court of Appeal, Awka, has confirmed Victor Umeh as the Labor Party (LP) candidate for Anambra Central District, Anambra State.

In its judgment, the court ruled that the lawsuit that would have disqualified Mr. Umeh in the Federal High Court, Awka, was statute-barred and devoid of locus.

Judge Olubunmi Oyewole, who read the judgment via zoom, allowed the two appeals of the LP and Mr. Umeh to stand.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Uche Ekwunife, the PDP's senatorial candidate, have sued Mr. Umeh in the Federal High Court on the grounds that he did not had not resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, before choosing the LP ticket.

On January 27, Judge Hyeladzira Nganjiwa granted the PDP prayer and disqualified Mr. Umeh.

The LP and Mr. Umeh, through their counsel, respectively Alex Ejesieme and Patrick Ikwetoh, appealed against the judgment for lack of locus by the respondents and asked the court to set aside the judgment.

Reacting, Beluolisa Nwofor, Ms. Ekwunife's lawyer, said he would appeal the judgment.
