Elections: My ambition is not worth the lives of the inhabitants — Gombe gov

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya on Friday said the elections were not a do-or-death affair, adding that his ambition to be re-elected governor for a second term is not worth the life of any resident of the State.

Yahaya made the revelation on his statewide broadcast watched by our correspondent ahead of Saturday's gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections in Gombe.

According to him, elections require the utmost tolerance, mutual respect, as he urged political gladiators to avoid bitterness and violence.

He said, “On a final note, I want to congratulate our people once again for their excellent conduct in the last election. I call on the people to continue on the path of peace, tolerance and mutual respect.

“Election is not a matter of death, and electoral competition should not be the basis of political bitterness, ill will and violence. Although our political choices and affiliations may differ, we are bound by a common destiny as citizens of Gombe State. Ultimately, it is Allah Almighty who gives and takes power to whom he wills and when he wills."

Yahaya stressed that his ambition was not worth the blood of a Gombe resident.

Reaffirming his determination to ensure a smooth electoral process, the governor said the peace of the state remained essential to him.

"For us, the interest, well-being and stability of the State of Gombe are paramount. It is above any personal ambition or partisan consideration. I have always declared that my ambition is not worth not the blood or welfare of a citizen of Gombe State.

"Yesterday I was at the all-party peace talks to reaffirm our commitment to ensure the peaceful conduct of the gubernatorial and state assembly elections, as I believe we have a duty to our state to leave a legacy of peace, development and progress. I therefore call on all politicians and groups to refrain from any act or statement that could jeopardize the peace and stability of our beloved State.

“I would like to commend them for their hard work and professionalism in previous elections. They gave us the assurance to deploy all legal means available to ensure that our people can vote in an atmosphere of peace, tranquility and non-interference. I assure them of our continued support and cooperation in discharging their constitutional responsibilities,” Yahaya added.
