England v USA at Wembley in October will crown unofficial world champions

August 3 - The European Champions will face the Concacaf Champions on October 7 at Wembley in what will unofficially decide who is the best women's team in the world today.

The United States, current world champions and on a five-year streak at the top of the FIFA World Rankings, beat Olympic champions Canada in Monterrey, Mexico, last month.

England are at the top of football after beating Germany 2-1 in the Euro 2022 final on Sunday.

It was a summit that ignited the country, already in full fever with the hosting of the Euro 2022 championships.

Following the announcement of the game in the US, the volume of fans rushing for Wembley tickets crashed the English FA website.

At one point, there were online queues of over 45,000 people, with an estimated wait time of over an hour.

England last played USA in 2020 in Orlando, Florida, losing 2-0 in the SheBelieves Cup. In 2019, the United States eliminated England from the World Cup in France 2-1 in the semi-finals, as they won the title.

This summer, both teams have been impressive in winning their regional championships, both competitions have been expanded from previous editions.

The Wembley friendly is subject to England qualifying for the 2023 World Cup next month. This should actually be a formality as England are five points ahead of Austria in the Group D and need a point for Austria on September 3 or a win against Luxembourg in Stoke three days later. The Stoke game has already sold 20,000 tickets and is about to sell out fast.

England's win over Germany was played in front of a record 87,192 fans at Wembley and watched by a BBC TV audience of 17.4 million. Even in a football-crazed country like England, it reflects how much women's football has raised its profile in such a short time.

USA head coach Vlatko Andonovski said: "This is exactly the kind of game we need at the right time in our preparations for the World Cup so that we can compete against a very talented England team. I saw England play live at the Euros and I'm looking forward to an incredible atmosphere at Wembley and another great event for women's football."
