These accolades come from a new satisfaction survey of motorways and main roads carried out by independent monitoring body Transport Focus, with the M40 - which links London and Birmingham - ranked No. 1. 2 and the A30, which connects London to Land's End, the second best route.
The M6 is declared the worst motorway in England and the A27 arrives in last place of the entire list, with an overall satisfaction score of 59 percent.
The study surveyed more than 9,000 road users on their last journey on a motorway or a large "One" road managed by the National Roads, the people questioned being invited to evaluate their journey times, the management of the works, the quality of the surface, their feeling of safety , the quality of permanent signage and electronic signage.
The top-rated M5, which runs from the Midlands to the southwest, has a score Overall satisfaction rating of 82 percent, with road users happy with their journey time, traffic flowed smoothly and the road was not too busy during their journey, Transport Focus said.
