Enugu beats 35 other states in delivering primary healthcare in Nigeria

An international, non-partisan, non-profit, advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable diseases, especially in Africa through public awareness, among others, ONE Campaign, has Recognized Enugu as the Second Best Performing State in Primary Health Care Service Delivery in Nigeria for 2019-2021.

Presenting the Recognition Award to the Executive Secretary of Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENSPHCDA), George Ugwu, One Campaign Nigeria Country Director Stanley Achonu congratulated the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the excellent status of the state's primary health care system.

Mr. Achonu revealed that ONE Campaign, which is also a global movement "pressuring political leaders to support policies and programs that save lives and improve futures", in partnership with National Advocates for Health, Nigeria Health Watch, Public Private Development Centre, the World Bank and other partners, worked together in ranking Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Country Director maintained that Enugu State had achieved excellent results in the provision of primary health care services to deserve the award.

He therefore commended Governor Ugwuanyi for making the provision of primary health care a priority of his administration for the general benefit of the state's residents, especially those residing in rural areas.

The Executive Secretary of ENSPHCDA, Mr. Ugwu was also applauded for the successes the agency has registered so far, including its great impact in safeguarding the health of the residents of the state , especially in the fight against yellow fever, cholera, COVID-19 pandemic and all childhood related diseases which won Enugu State the award.

In briefing reporters after unveiling the award to Governor Ugwuanyi at Government House, Enugu, Mr. Ugwu expressed his gratitude to the Governor for providing the necessary support and enabling environment "that enabled 'achieving the excellent performance that led to this recognition and possible award.'

The Executive Secretary of ENSPHCDA, who explained that Enugu State came behind the FCT which was ranked first in the provision of primary health care services in Nigeria, pointed out that Enugu was ranked the best among the 36 states in the country.

Congratulating Mr. Ugwuanyi for this enviable achievement, Mr. Ugwu revealed that the Governor “since 2015 has consistently made the delivery of primary health care services a priority in line with his rural development agenda,” gloating that the positive results of his administration's huge investment in the health sector are becoming evident and cherished nationally and internationally.

According to him, "the unique and exceptional type 3 primary health centers that are now functional in many parts of the state and the improvement of primary health care programs and services with the implementation of the services of basic health care as well as the provision of funds has been remarkably innovative and impactful in Enugu State.”

Mr. Ugwu pointed out that the assessment leading to recognition was conducted by a group of civil society organizations (CSOs) and their international partners under the leadership of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.
