Consumer groups in the European Union (EU) have urged regulators to investigate the artificial intelligence (AI) models behind popular chatbots.

According to an AP report on Tuesday, 13 watchdog groups issued a warning to their national consumer protection, data protection, competition and product safety authorities over concerns about generative AI.

The groups said regulators should investigate the AI ​​behind systems, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, to assess risks and vulnerabilities to consumers before EU regulations are introduced on AI.

In addition to local EU officials, the coalition has written to United States President Joe Biden with similar concerns about potential harm to consumers from generative AI.

Their call to action urged leaders to use existing legislation and pass new laws to address AI concerns. They cited a report by the Norwegian Consumer Council which highlights the dangers of AI chatbots, including misinformation, data collection and manipulation.
