Even Romano baffled by Chelsea fee for Gordon as Tottenham rumors tackled

Fabrizio Romano believes the offer Chelsea have made for Everton midfielder Antony Gordon is a 'very high price' for his abilities.

The England Under-21 international has made 63 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions since making his first-team debut in a Europa League game in December 2017.

Following a ten-game loan spell at Preston North End in the 2020-21 season, he returned to be an important part of Everton's first team last term.

Anthony Gordon to Chelsea is a £60m move that absolutely doesn't suit anyone

Gordon scored four goals and provided two assists in 35 Premier League appearances, making 25 starts for the Toffees as they avoided relegation to the Championship.

Chelsea have already made a £45m bid for the young talent, but reports yesterday indicated they were willing to pay up to £60m for the midfielder.< /p>

It is understood a £50m up-front deal with a further £10m has been offered, but Everton are insisting on a loan for Armando Broja or Conor Gallagher.

And transfer expert Romano, who rarely gives great opinions on transfers, admits the fee Chelsea could pay Everton for Gordon seems too high.

Romano told CaughtOffside: "I know Tottenham have spoken of interest as well, but so far the only offer on the table from Everton is from Chelsea.

"Negotiations are continuing, personal terms between Gordon and Chelsea have been agreed.

"I think £60m is a very high price, honestly, but Todd Boehly wants to invest in young talent as an important part of Chelsea's new project."

Many pundits and former players have also racked their brains over the potential fee for Gordon, with former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor being one of the latest to show their bewilderment.

'I just don't understand Chelsea,'" Agbonlahor told Football Insider. "They confuse me, to be honest. They don't need wingers anymore, they need strikers.

"For God's sake, it's not rocket science. Why would you choose Gordon when you have enough good enough wingers? You need a number nine who can score goals.

"For me, if I'm Everton, I say 'Any offer for Gordon that we don't even look at. It doesn't matter if it's £40m, £50m or £60m , we have to keep the players for now, we can't afford to let them go.

"They sold Richarlison, that's the bulk of the summer they let go because it was money. As of now, nobody's sellable. I think that's where Everton will stand, to be honest."
