Everton make history with least imaginative five-man shortlist ever, including £5m 'dark horse'

Everton broke the record for selecting five least imaginative managers in football history as Frank Lampard returned to his semi-permanent residence at The Brink.

Lampard is the overwhelming favorite to be the next Premier League manager to leave after guiding Everton into another relegation battle.

The Toffees are 18th in the table and winless in eight games, with just one win since early October.

The loss to Man Utd in the FA Cup third round has only exacerbated the lingering problems at Goodison Park and it looks likely that Lampard will pay for his labor soon.

"The players were very, very good, in terms of organization, game plan, work ethic, unity - things that should be fundamental in football," said- he said after the 3-1 defeat. "But people question them when you have a performance and a result like we did the other night.

"We were really good, we had the best chances, I think, but I have to analyze the game again. We had good chances and the goal was disallowed.

"Marcus Rashford was probably a bit of a difference between teams because the best individual talent can do that to you."

There has been a shift in the market to replace Lampard and it looks like Sean Dyche is the predictable new favourite.

The former Burnley boss leads 'a group of top managers' on Everton's radar, as reported by The Sun.

The rest of these names rather contradict this description: Duncan Ferguson, Wayne Rooney, David Moyes and Ange Postecoglou.

That seems to be the extent of a "series of candidates who would be willing to throw their hats in the ring" if Lampard were sacked.

Dyche is said to be 'sharp' and fits the bill after his impeccable work at Burnley, while James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil represent familiar faces who could ease his transition into the job.

Almost a year after turning down his boyhood club, DC United head coach Rooney is reportedly 'jumping' at the chance to lead them, while Ferguson is a potential, albeit unlikely, candidate.< /p>

Moyes, who has West Ham in a similar position to Everton on an even bigger budget, is a 'dark horse' who has been 'loved' by Bill Kenwright since their previous working relationship.

It would be absolutely sensational if Everton paid West Ham £5m in compensation to bring the Scot back.

Postecoglou could be considered but it would be difficult to entice him to leave Celtic for a much less pleasant life.
