Malpractice Review: WAEC Decertifies 13 Schools in Gombe

No less than 13 high schools in Gombe State have been decertified in four years by the West Africa Examination Council.

Our correspondent reports that schools have been decertified due to poor exam practices.

According to Gombe State Ministry of Education Director of Examinations, Ali Yaya, they were decertified due to malpractice issues.

The director made this revelation during a meeting with the directors of public secondary schools and the leadership of the ministry.

He revealed that decertification would be catastrophic if adequate precautions were not taken to prevent the consequences.

Yaya said, “From 2018 to 2020, seven of our public high schools were found to be involved in exam misconduct, which led to their derecognition by WAEC.

"Similarly in 2022, the Ministry received a new set of six schools which committed the same offense and they were also de-recognized with a fine of N500,000 fee per school payable to WAEC."< /p>

While lamenting the impact of de-certification on the overall performance of students in the final result of the 2022 senior high school exams, Yaya noted that exam malpractice is currently the main challenge facing state senior high schools and that needs to be resolved.

"The percentage of the result for 2022 was 55.6% compared to 79.5% for 2021 and this is linked to the malpractices in the exams recorded in six of our schools", he added.

He warned all principals of schools to steer clear of exam malpractice in any form, adding: "Any principal who will amount to breach of any form of malpractice in the exams will be severely punished and the fine will have to be paid by the school."

When contacted to find out how the state government, through the Department of Education, planned to overturn the gavel by the review body, the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Aishatu Maigari, said the government would never support malpractice.

“Zero tolerance for exam malpractice is our position,” Maigari added.
