The sun slips over the horizon and the Ionian Sea sparkles with the last of its rays as we let's look up from our table at the Alselea restaurant at Parga Beach Resort and witness a dramatic moment.

A man and a woman dine at a table on the sand . We kept a vague eye on them all evening, wondering if a marriage proposal was imminent.

Of course, as we finished our entrees, they stand by the waters edge having an intense moment. We hold our breath. Then they kiss: it's a clear "yes" and the guests burst into applause.

"We get a lot of proposals here," says Roi Ioannou, who manages the Parga Beach Resort with his brother Christos.

He It's easy to see why, with the backdrop of dancing boats and the romantic ruins of Parga Castle overlooking the headland.

Parga is in the area of Epirus, north- west coast of mainland Greece. Its position on the Ionian Sea from Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos gave it strategic importance and it was frequently attacked by the Ottomans, Venetians and French.
