False: Court dismisses APC candidate in Jigawa

The Federal High Court in Dutse, Jigawa State, overturned the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for Kazaure Constituency to the State Legislative Assembly.

The court ordered Muhammad Idris, who was declared the winner of the primary election, to leave the seat to his main opponent, Bala Hamza.

In the May 26 primary elections, Mr. Idris obtained 29 votes while Mr. Hamza obtained 24 votes.

However, Mr. Hamza challenged the result in court. He argued that five party delegates from his constituency were “intimidated and disenfranchised” in the primary election. He also claimed that Mr. Idris had presented a fake school certificate to INEC.

On Thursday, trial judge Hassan Dikko said the court was satisfied that Mr. Idris had not been validly elected as the party's candidate.

The court also ruled that it was satisfied that Mr. Idris had falsified the certificate he presented for the primary election.

With the court ruling, Mr. Hamza now has 29 votes to beat Mr. Idris who won 24 votes.

The plaintiff's lead lawyer, Ibrahim Sa'ad, said he was satisfied with the outcome of the judgment and described it as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

Attorney for the defendants, Umar Yalleman, declined to speak to reporters after the ruling.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hamza, who is the incumbent member representing Kazaure constituency in the National Assembly, called the judgment a win-win for the APC.

He called on his opponent to join hands for the success of the APC at the state and federal levels.
