Four countries where women can marry more than one husband

It is not uncommon for men to have more than one wife, with many cultural practices and world religions even supporting this habit. However, it seems unusual to hear of a woman with multiple husbands. Polyandry is a form of marriage in which a woman takes two or more husbands at the same time. According to Britannica.com, here are some countries that allow polyandry.

1. India

One of the countries that allows polyandry is India. India as a country has more than one tribe practicing polyandry. Polyandry is spread in parts of northern India by the Paharis in the Jaunsarbawar region while in Kinnaur, Himachal, a minority of people justify and practice polyandry.

As descendants of the Pachi Pandavas, they believe they must carry on the tradition. Also, the Toda tribe of Nilgris, Najanad Vellala of Travancore and some Nair caste systems in South India practice polyamory.

2. Kenya

In August 2013, Kenya experienced polyandry when two men decided to be husbands to a woman they both loved. Kenyan laws do not explicitly prohibit polyandry; therefore, no legal action can be taken against those who practice it. Cases of polyandry have also been reported among the Maasai of Kenya.

3. China

The practice of brotherly polyandry is common among Tibetans in northern China and India. It is based on the belief that a child can have more than one father, and generally when two or more brothers marry a woman, they all have equal sexual access to her.

The practice is encouraged if the family is poor and cannot divide its properties among the descendants of separated fathers. They therefore keep their small agricultural lands and their properties by marrying the same woman.

4. Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is mainly located in the Himalayas, but it also includes parts of the Indo-Gangetic plain. Polyandry has been officially banned in Nepal since 1963, but people in the Humla, Dolpa and Kosi regions value their traditions much more than the law. There are entire villages of polyandrous families here.

This type of marriage is also common among the northern and northeastern tribes of Nepal, including the Bhote, Sherpa, Newbie and others.
