The Federal Road Safety Corps Area Commander in charge of the FCT and Niger, Deputy Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, says there is no mystery about the 'ember months'.

Mohammed made his views known Monday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said the reality, however, was that the so-called "ember months" were in no way different from the other eight months of the year.

According to him, the tragedies happen during the "ember months" as they happened in the other months.

Mohammed said it was wrong to attribute what he called "an unnecessary spiritual and mystical undertone to the tragic events" during the "ember" months.

He denounced such nuance as the usual way in Nigeria to trivialize serious issues instead of using methodical means to assess matters of crucial public concern.

He implored motorists and commuters that instead of donning the "ember months in a free mystery costume", they should realize that the months were no different than the other eight months of the month. year.

"The truth is that there is generally an increase in the pace of public, private and corporate activity during these ember months.

"In recent weeks, cases of preventable tragedies in the form of road accidents have been reported in the media.

“The most recent is the one that happened on Yangoji-Gwagwalada Road in the FCT where 19 passengers were killed and burned beyond recognition,” he said.

Mohammed said most road accidents during the "smoldering months" happened at night with poor visibility and delayed response from first responders.

"There is little response in the night and it leads to deaths. There is no mystery about the ember months.

"Once we adhere to preventable measures, we should be able to reduce the number of deaths to the bare minimum," he said.

Mohammed urged commercial drivers and other road users to always respect the sanctity of human life by observing road safety measures.

“One thing is for sure is that nothing is wrong with the ember months, we should rather get rid of what is wrong with us,” he said.

Mohammed praised FRSC Acting Corps Marshal Dauda Biu for undertaking an on-site assessment of the Yangoji-Gwagwalada road accident.

He said the action showed his strong leadership and commitment to the cause of road safety. (NA).
