Eyewitness Idongesit Akpan told reporters on Monday that in the ensuing argument, the dealer walked over to the gallon of gasoline and poured it on his victim and struck a match before it caught fire as others rushed to safety.< /p>

Akpan further said that the victim was rescued by the villagers and students who alerted the vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Nse Essien, who ordered the victim to be rushed to the hospital. Akpan said, "The incident caught the attention of community leaders such as the former president of OrukAnam, Prince Ubong Idiong, who convinced the students to prevent retaliation from university students. .

Police Public Relations Officer of Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the incident, said Police Commissioner Olatoye Dorusinmi had ordered an investigation on the case, adding that the suspect would soon be arrested.

He said, “Yes, we are aware of the incident. But the suspect escaped from the scene. The police are following the suspect now and he will soon be brought to justice.”
