BBC chief executive Tim Davie has apologized to royalty payers after a day of disruption to sports programming .

Football broadcasts were halted at the last minute on Saturday after presenters and commentators pulled out to support the host of the day's game, Gary Lineker.

Match of the Day has been reduced to a 20-minute edition.

Lineker was suspended after criticizing the government's controversial asylum policy. But Mr Davie denied the Government pressured him to move.

As well as having no presenters, Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday evening aired without commentary, and experts Alan Shearer and Ian Wright did not appear.

The program was also without its famous theme and opening credits. opening. The show started with a graphic read 'Premier League Highlights' before launching straight into clips from the Bournemouth game against Liverpool - the usual commentary replaced by the sound of the crowd.

Mr. Davie admitted it had been a "difficult day" for the company but said "we are working very hard to resolve the situation".
