Gomez highlights Kompany's influence on his career, moves to Man City

Manchester City's new signing Sergio Gomez has highlighted the key role played by club legend Vincent Kompany in his career development and his recent move to the Etihad Stadium.

Gomez joined City from Anderlecht for £11m (€13m) on Tuesday to become Pep Guardiola's fourth signing after Kalvin Phillips, Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega.

The left-back was instrumental for the Belgium side under Kompany last season, racking up 49 appearances and registering 15 assists along the way.

Kompany enjoyed huge success with City between 2008 and 2019, winning 12 trophies, including four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

And Gomez, who spent his youth career at Barcelona before a move to Borussia Dortmund, received the former skipper's blessing before completing his move to the Etihad.

"I spoke to [Kompany] a few days ago when I found out City wanted to sign me," the 21-year-old told the club's official website.

"He was very happy for me; he told me that it would be an important step in my career and that I was making the right decision by coming here.

"It's a big step for me. I'm really happy that [City] have expressed an interest in signing me, and I'm going to do my best to show on the pitch that I deserve to be here, and I hope we can achieve great things together.

"I think I've grown at every stage of my career, I hope to continue to do so here at City. I'm here to learn and help this team as much as I can."

Previously a wide or central midfielder, Gomez also explained that he hasn't looked back since Kompany turned him into a left-back at Anderlecht last season.

"He called me and told me that I could do very well in this position," the Spain Under-21 international continued.

"To be honest, I was a little surprised, I didn't expect it, but he seemed very sure of his decision, and that gave me confidence.

"I will always be grateful to Vincent for this opportunity; I still play at left-back and I really like that."
