Governor orders caterer arrested for 'poor quality' food served at party

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi on Thursday ordered the arrest of the caterer who allegedly served shoddy food at the state's widows and elderly Christmas party.

Mr. Umahi, who did not reveal the name of the caterer, said it was terrible for someone to give others what he or she could not consume.

The governor said police would follow due process in investigating the cook for reimbursement of funds given to her to prepare the food.

"So we are going to repeat this holiday because we must celebrate our fathers and mothers well.

"The Bible enjoins us to honor our fathers and mothers so that our days on earth may be long.

"I have instructed the Deputy Governor and my Senior Special Advisor on Religious and Social Issues to make adequate preparations.

"The celebration must be on December 20 or 21, because whoever takes what belongs to this category of people is bored," he said.

Mr. Umahi also expressed dismay at the quality of wrappers given to widows and elders, describing them as shoddy.

"We gave the officials high-quality packaging and they were happy.

"The people who supplied those for officials should be prepared to supply 10,000 of the highest quality wrappers, to widows and elders."

He advised parents to inculcate good morals in their children to stem the social vices seen in the country, especially in the southeast zone.

"When I said that the mode of unrest some people were spreading in the area would be out of control if left unchecked, people didn't take it seriously.

"Ebonyi will never be part of an unrest that leads to the murder of our people and the wanton destruction of property," he said.
