“Grantchester”: Tom Brittney To Leave Masterpiece series; Rishi Nair joins the cast as the new vicar

Lead actor Tom Brittney has announced that the upcoming ninth season of the Masterpiece/ITV drama Grantchester will be his last.

Brittany has played Reverend Will Davenport on the detective series since 2019 and takes a step back to focus on new projects. Grantchester follows detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and motorbike vicar Will (Brittney) as they investigate murders in the Cambridgeshire village.

The drama cast Rishi Nair (Hollyoaks, Count Abdulla) as a new charismatic vicar named Alphy Kotteram. Filming is already underway on the ninth season; the eighth debuted Sunday, July 9 on Masterpiece.

"I've had an amazing time with Will Davenport over the past five years," said Brittney. in a report. "I was able to solve crimes with my best friend and work with the best cast and crew I could have ever asked for. I will miss that more than anything. But it's time for the baton to be passed, as it has has been for me, and I'm so excited to have Rishi join the Grantchester family."

"I am absolutely delighted to be joining Grantchester," Nair continued in a statement. "The welcome and support I've received from everyone has been overwhelming. The success of the show and why we're here for a ninth season is a testament to everyone who's ever worked on it. I'm really excited to get started and can't wait for Grantchester fans to meet Alphy and see all that lies ahead."
