Could this be a house in gingerbread ? Or maybe a Russian chapel or a Battenburg cake. In fact, this is a fabulous vacation rental in Essex.

This has got to be one of the quirkiest places to stay in Great Britain. Brittany and I spend a night there. here. Its name, however, is simple: "A House For Essex". And my abode has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and lots of people watching them strolling along the public footpath by the River Stour that separates Essex from Suffolk.

A House For Essex is the brainchild of Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry, who was born in Chelmsford and raised locally. It was completed in 2014, in collaboration with Charles Holland of FAT Architecture, as a work of art that people could also live in.

Until now, its huge popularity with art lovers meant it could be reserved by vote only. But the vacation rental company that offers quirky accommodations, Living Architecture, which specializes in cutting-edge design properties, is reverting to a traditional reservation system, so it's easier for vacationers to plan their stays.

While the exterior is somewhat bewildering, with its Hansel and Gretel airs — the shape of the house “growing” from the entrance to the garden in a series of four sections that seem glued together — the interior doesn't let you down, as far as the extraordinary goes. Walk through the front door and the place bursts with color, red and yellow doors and panels from the otherwise functional spaces.
