Armed men attack Ifeanyi Ubah's convoy in Anambra

Heavily armed bandits attacked the convoy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, killing at least seven people.

While details of the incident are scarce at press time, Senator Uba and his driver reportedly escaped in his bulletproof sport utility vehicle (SUV).

The attack took place around Nkwor market in Enugu-Ukwu Njikoka local government area, according to amateur video showing the hit vehicles of the convoy which had multiple bullet holes.

The senator and his escorts were allegedly ambushed by heavily armed men who opened fire on his convoy.

Among the victims found in the vehicles were some of his aides and policemen attached to the senator.

Witnesses in Enugu-Ukwu town used their phone handsets to videotape the affected vehicles, including SUVs and security escort vehicles whose drivers were shot and engines were still smoking with full headlights on on.

The dead bodies of the victims were seen lying inside the vehicles, and the windshields were completely shattered by bullets as seen in the video.

Ubah survived the attack because he was in an armored car, according to his assistant.

Nigerian Tribune could not reach Senator Ubah for confirmation as his line remained busy throughout.

State Police Command spokesman DSP Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed that there was an attack on command men in Enugwu-Ukwu, but insisted that the number of victims remained unknown.

He said, "Yes, there was an attack in Enugwu-Ukwu today, but the number of casualties is unclear. As I speak to you, the PC has personally led a team of men at the scene, and normalcy was restored."

He promised to inform journalists of the command's findings.
