Gunmen attack Ondo police division and kill an officer

Gunmen killed a policeman in a midnight attack on a police division in Okuta Elerinla, Akure, Ondo State.

Funmilayo Odunlami, the state police spokesman, said the attack happened at 1am on Monday

"Police officers who were on alert and conscious of their duty repelled them accordingly and the malefactors were unable to enter the station," the police spokesman said.

“During the crossfire, one of our gallant post guards AP.207538 0INSPR. Teminu Boluwaji, was hit by a bullet. He later died on his way to hospital.”

She said Police Commissioner Oyeyemi Oyediran ordered the state Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure the perpetrators were apprehended.

"He also uses this medium to encourage the citizens of the state to perform their lawful duty without fear, as the days of these criminals are numbered," Ms. Odunlami added.

There is no indication that the attackers suffered casualties.

A similar attack occurred in Oshimili North Local Government Area in Delta State on Sunday, where gunmen attacked a post of the local vigilante group and killed three policemen.

Similar attacks took place against police formations in Kogi and Anambra states.

Although the police have yet to arrest the attackers, it will be recalled that a deadly attack was carried out by gunmen on June 5 at St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, State of Ondo.

As many as 41 people lost their lives in the attack, while several others were injured.
