Gunmen kill Chinese expat in Nigeria

Gunmen shot dead a Chinese expatriate in Ebonyi State, southeast Nigeria.

Details of the attack were still unclear at the time of this report, but sources said the incident happened on Sunday at a mine site in Iboko, Izzi Local Government Area of the State.

The armed men allegedly disarmed the police who were protecting the Chinese.

The body of the Chinese man was reportedly deposited in a morgue in Abakaliki.

Izzi Local Government Area Chairman Steve Emenike, who confirmed the incident, expressed his displeasure at the killing, calling it a "national embarrassment".

Mr. Emenike said the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and wreaked havoc in Otam village in the council area.

He said the local government council, in its response to the incident, reconstituted a vigilante group and banned the riding of motorbikes between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. until further notice.

Mr. Emenike said the council is working with the police and state security service to find those responsible for the murders of the Chinese.

“We can no longer accept or tolerate this wave of insecurity. Izzi is peaceful and we intend to maintain this peace for the well-being of our people,” he added.

Ebonyi State Police Spokesman Chris Anyanwu said his office had not yet been notified of the incident.

"I believe the signal will come tomorrow," he said.

The security situation in southeastern Nigeria continued to deteriorate, with armed men carrying out frequent attacks on security officers and security installations.

Most of the attacks in the region have been attributed to a separatist group, the IPOB.

Two people, including a policeman, were killed in Enugu State on Sunday when gunmen attacked a police station in the state.
