The source said the gunmen fired indiscriminately as the bullets hit all four people.

Confirming the attack in a press release, state police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said the bodies of the victims were deposited at the morgue.

Ikenga said: "Police/military operations intensified in Ihiala and nearby town as officers responded to a distress call in the early hours of Tuesday on Nzomiwu Street, Eziani, Ihiala, recovered dead bodies, three men and a woman at the scene.

"Preliminary information revealed that the armed criminal elements of Ak47 started firing indiscriminately and without provocation, unfortunately, bullets hit four unarmed civilians. The bodies were deposited in the morgue."
