Managing and Overcoming Disappointment, By Yemi Adetayo

Disappointment

Never forget that every adversity is a seed of greatness. Find the seed of greatness as the doctor did. If you use this guide correctly, you will always emerge a champion in disappointing situations and people.

He practiced medicine as a doctor, but later found his heart was in communications, and when he took a self-discovery inventory, he discovered he had a passion for public relations. He was determined to find happiness no matter what.

After several inquiries, he registered and passed the exams of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, registered a communications consultancy firm and was ready to start. Another very important factor he put in place was to make sure he got buy-in from mentors to help him succeed in his new venture. He became a voracious reader and in no time was able to get some good clients and he soon started an events company as well. He promoted one of his PR teams and moved her to head the events company.

At the time, they only had one client for the events subsidiary, this client had a function and the doctor who became a communication expert went there as general manager of the group of his companies, to discovering to his dismay that his staff had registered his own business and taken over the only client. He felt betrayed; it was shocking, painful and devastating. I'm sure you're eager to hear how he handled the disappointment.

How would you have handled this if this had happened to you? No one wants to experience any form of disappointment, but if you are disappointed, how are you going to deal with it? Most people handle disappointment poorly, some even lose their minds because some people they really trust have let them down. Let me share with you some practical ways to deal with disappointment in a positive and successful way.

First, you need to understand that it's okay to feel bad, but it's not healthy to feel bad for a long time. The advice is to feel bad for a limited time. Anyone can disappoint you and it's usually very painful, but please don't let disappointment take too long. The easiest way to do this is to let it out - talk to positive, solution-oriented friends and family.

Second, find out why the disappointment was not averted. Was there a mismanagement that the staff took advantage of? Would it be legal, for example, to bind staff to tight contracts? What would have prevented such a thing from happening? Brainstorm, think aloud with professionals, lawyers, etc. If you don't, you risk repeating the same mistakes over and over again. It is therefore necessary to know what gave rise to the disappointment. Make what you discover your learning curve, so you never make the mistake again.

Third, place the issues involved in proper perspective. The deed has been done, the lessons learned and now life must go on. What if, in the case cited, the client leaves and the staff still end up with salaries to pay. What if God would take away the bad eggs before your organization got great, that such disloyal people wouldn't be present...
