Health commissioners call for vigilance over killer cough syrups

The Chairman of the Nigerian Health Commissioners Forum, Dr Oyebanji Filani, has advised Nigerians against the use of certain cough syrups which have resulted in the deaths of more than 66 children in Gambia, West Africa.

Oyebanji, the Health Commissioner of Ekiti State, who listed the syrups as "Promethazine Oral Solution BP, Kofexmalin- Baby Cough Syrup, MaKOFF Baby and MaGrip n Cold Syrup,” urged Nigerians to begin the search for the drugs.

The NHCF, in a statement to Ado Ekiti on Tuesday titled 'Health Commissioners Forum warns against use of four tainted cough syrups', accused parents whose children had symptoms such as diarrhea and headaches to seek the advice of medical professionals.

Oyebanji said the World Health Organization had ordered the drugs withdrawn from circulation to prevent further harm.

He said: "WHO Director-General Dr Tedross Ghebreyasus noted that these syrups contain two toxic products typically used as a solvent and an antifreeze agent which have been confirmed to cause acute kidney injury in children.

"WHO added that toxic products are colorless and nearly odorless, making them difficult to detect."

The NHCF Chairman added that the Chief Executive of the National Food Drug Administration and Control Agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has confirmed that the said drugs were not registered in Nigeria.
