'Heart Of Stone' review: Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan in Netflix's spy thriller that leans heavily into familiar Bond-style action overload

Netflix is clearly committed to playing the big studio game of big star-led action franchises . Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many more others represent large-screen type entertainment designed for people to watch on their sofas at home.
Those sorts of things, while done skillfully and expensively, do work always better at Imax than in your living room, but the streamer is convinced it's going to lose subscriptions, so expect more films like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded of James Bond action scenes, but with a wonderful woman named Gal Gadot at the center of it all. Taking inspiration from Charlize Theron's Netflix franchise The Old Guard, it's a female-led business where the males, namely Jamie Dornan's complicated villain, mostly take a back seat. In fact, it's a Gadot vehicle all the way.
Right from the start we feel like we're in Jane Bond territory with an action sequence 20-minute pre-credits located in a luxurious ski resort in the Italian Alps (the Glacier Hotel Grawand, at the highest point in Europe). There, after pulling off a few bait and switch moves in the casino, MI6 tech expert Rachel Stone (Gadot) blows things up with a thrilling chase through icy mountains in a scene clearly inspired by the movies. 007. . You half expect Billie Eilish to show up with a theme song anytime.
