The thugs on Monday morning attacked and set fire to a section of Ezza North local government headquarters, destroying valuable items and documents worth millions of naira.

The chairman of the council, Ogodo-Ali Nomeh, confirmed the incident.

According to him, the arsonists numbering more than 20 people stormed the area around 1 a.m. and set fire to the local government store.

He said the arsonists were however resisted by the police, who managed to inflict gunshot wounds on some of them before they escaped.

"The fire destroyed new air conditioners purchased for the renovation of the town hall, documents, a generator and furniture," he said.

Mr. Nomeh said the Community Self-Defense Apparatus and security agencies were on the trail of the injured arsonists.

He said he was confident they would soon be arrested to answer for the crime.

When asked if he knew the reason the attacker stormed and his alleged sponsors, the president said they would be dug up at the end of the investigation by security agencies.

According to him, security had been reinforced in the communal area to prevent such an incident from happening again.
