The President conveyed his sentiments during a meeting with members of the Senior Executives Course (SEC) No. 44 (2022) of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, on Thursday in Abuja .

He recounted his personal experience in stemming the tide of corruption in the local government system after the presentation of the NIPSS SEC 44 report.

Mr. Buhari listened to feedback on the presentation of Course 44, on the theme "Strengthening Local Governance in Nigeria: Challenges, Options and Opportunities", by some members of the Federal Executive Council, who expressed their personal views on strengthening local governance in Nigeria. the autonomy of local communities. governments.

The president also recounted his own experience of the treatment of local governments by some state governments.

‘‘I found it necessary to make a digression after reading my speech and this digression is the result of my personal experience.

''What they did is my personal experience, if the money from the Federation account to the state is around 100 million naira, 50 million naira will be sent to the president but he will sign that he received 100 million naira. The governor will pocket the balance and share it with whomever he wants to share it.

‘‘And then the president of the local government has to see how much he has to pay in salaries and to hell with the development. When he pays the great man's wages, the balance he will put in his pocket.

‘‘That’s what’s happening. It's Nigeria. It is a terrible thing; you can't say that the person doing this is uneducated.''

Mr. Buhari urged public office holders to be guided by their conscience and personal integrity wherever they are.

He promised that the recommendations contained in the SEC 44 presentation would be carefully studied by the government with a view to implementing his recommendations.

While stating that his administration has done so much to build trust between the government and the people, the president noted that the report would go a long way in ensuring good governance for the people at the local level and, by extension, reclaiming their trust in government.

‘‘It is obvious that the government cannot afford to pretend to accept the recommendations contained in this report.

‘‘I assure you that the report will be treated with the seriousness and urgency it deserves. The government will study the report with a view to implementing the carefully detailed recommendations,” he said.

He commended the quality of the report, the commitment and dedication that went into it, saying that "we can always trust the National Institute to carry out very critical and sensitive missions of importance national".
