How we met: “He played the tambourine and made chili con carne. I wanted to go home'

At the start of 2019, Kate was too busy juggling her professional life in Bradford to give serious thought to romance. “In addition to a role at a charity, I had another job in mental health,” she says. One evening, she bumped into an old friend at a concert. Nick was a music promoter looking for unusual spaces in Yorkshire for bands to perform. "The charity I work for is based at St Clement's Church in Bradford, with this wonderful William Morris ceiling," she says. "I knew the vicar was looking for new ways to increase his income, so I asked if he would like to visit." Nick thought it would be the perfect venue for the comeback gig of Fiat Lux - a newly reformed 80s synth pop band.

"I was a little scared to do live shows again." As soon as he arrived, Kate put him at ease. "She was very welcoming but it was a fleeting visit." She showed him around the room and he checked the acoustics. "I was looking for a wedding ring and I would have liked to wear makeup," laughs Kate.

A few months later, they saw each other again when the group performed at the church. "When I saw him at the concert, I was doubly drawn because he was talented too," she says. "The band had a bit of a cult following, so people from all over Europe came." Although they didn't have much time to talk, Kate felt a spark. After the concert, she added the band on social media and asked if there were any photos from the event. “My daughter had taken some – we added each other as Facebook friends so I could share them,” says Steve. "We ended up discussing the gig and what a fun night it had been." type="model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement" class="dcr-a2pvoh">Their wedding day in September 2022 at the church where they first met.

In December of that year, Steve sent a message inviting him to have a cup of tea . "My heart was quite a beat," Kate says. "I proposed that we meet the next day." The cup of tea quickly became dinner and they didn't stop talking all night. “He played the tambourine for me and made chili con carne. It was as if I had known him forever.
