Igbo behind insecurity in Anambra – Soludo

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has explained why insecurity and kidnappings are rampant in the state, saying Anambra's economic situation among the southeastern states has made it a target of criminals.

He said that with the wave of insecurity in the state, his administration has put in place many measures to end the threat.

Soludo, who said this in an interview on Channels TV's Politics Today on Sunday, maintained that those who commit crimes in the state are Igbo.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria also said that contrary to claims, these crimes are known and not unknown as reported in the media.

“They are simple criminals. Some of these criminals also hide under the cloak of agitation, but the IPOB has repeatedly distanced itself from the criminals.

"They are kidnappers and common criminals and they do it because it is lucrative. Anambra is undoubtedly the richest state in the Southeast, so it is the state where kidnappings have the highest value and therefore you will have their highest concentration here.

"If you have an Okada pilot who goes into the bush; learns to shoot and joins a criminal gang after which they kidnap someone and make millions, it will no longer be easy to convince him to return to his Okada business .

“But we're decimating them. They're not unknown gunmen, they're unknown to the point that they may not be caught immediately. they already know that Anambra is no longer safe for them.

"Let's be clear, 100% of the people we captured are Igbo. There is no hoax that someone is invading from somewhere. It's 100% Igbo on Igbo.

"Anambra receives its proportionate share of an influx of Igbo from other southeastern states and other parts of Nigeria. At the initial stage when we stage and the first group of people that we captured are Igbo from the southeastern states and not from Anambra, but as we progressed we discovered that a large number of young people were joining them and we did not disguise ourselves among them , we treat them the same,” Soludo said.

On his efforts to nip insecurity in the bud, the governor maintained that several operations are underway to correct the anomaly, adding that the people of Anambra now enjoy relative peace.

“Anambra’s 8.5 million residents can tell you that insecurity is kept to a bare minimum. ceased.

"We have decimated the criminal gangs and their infrastructure and I don't think they have the ability to return again with the kind of ferocity they have had in the past.

“Anambra has been relatively peaceful lately and we are continuing a peaceful program. Compared to many other places in Nigeria, I will say if we are to have the stats for the last three months, I think Anambra will compete favorably as one of the safest comparatively.

“We are not backing down. Operations are continuing. Many communities are now at peace and have their new yam festival celebrations and these are things that were not possible in the past. events also happen simultaneously.

“However, insecurity will not disappear overnight. It took them years to put down roots and build about 15 camps in the 8 local governments. Their activities will not disappear in three months. let's not waver, we are pulling out all the stops and are committed to making Anambra safe and secure for residents and businesses,” he added.
