Igboho: Court of Appeal overturns N20 billion award against SSS

The Ibadan Court of Appeal on Tuesday overturned the N20 billion award to the federal government in a basic human rights lawsuit brought by Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho.

Oyo State High Court Judge Ladiran Akintola on September 17, 2021 awarded a cost of N20 billion "as exemplary and aggravated damages" against the security services of the State (SSS) for the invasion of the Igboho residence on July 1. 2021.

The judgment of the Court of Appeal, rendered virtually, was read by the judge, Muslim Hassan.

Mr. Hassan said the lower court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case and therefore set aside the judgment.

According to him, the lower court judge should not have awarded the cost based on his personal parameters.

Mr. Hassan described the awarded cost as "outrageous".

The SSS had stormed the residence of Igboho in the Soka region of Ibadan on July 1, 2021, because of his agitation for the establishment of the Yoruba nation.

Thirteen suspects, including a woman and 12 men, were arrested. His vehicles, including his G-wagon, Prado Jeep, and some valuable property, including furniture and windows, were also reportedly destroyed.

Two of Igboho's associates were reportedly killed during the SSS invasion.

This, however, necessitated the filing of a complaint with Igboho to obtain the enforcement of his basic human rights against the SSS.

Yomi Alliyu (SAN), Igboho's lawyer, did not respond to messages sent to him commenting on the judgment.
