Illumos gets a new C compiler

Illumos is a Unix system derived from OpenSolaris, and no Unix is complete without a C compiler or two. And with a name like Portable C Compiler (PCC), you'd think it would be a great bet to get up and running on Illumos. That's probably what [Brian Callahan] thought too, but he found out otherwise.

PCC already generates x86 code, so that wasn't the problem. This involved reconfiguring the compiler for the environment, ironic since PCC probably started on a real Unix but will no longer work with a 64-bit Solaris-like OS. From the post:

It looks like a while ago someone added a setup for 32-bit x86 and SPARC64 support for the Solaris family. But no one has ever tried to support 64-bit x86. So first we had to teach the configure script for pcc and pcc-libs to Solaris x86 64 bit

While there were some code changes, much of the problem centered around the differences between the tools available in Linux and Illuminas. It's an interesting insight into moving a tool around and gives you a taste of what life on Illumos might be like.

We still think we want to try one of the Illumos distributions or even Solaris proper. Reports of his death were apparently premature.
